Abstract
This book is a pioneering study of ecclesiastical divorce – a Church-authorized separation, since there was no absolute divorce until the 20th century. It consists of a long analytical introduction and excerpts from nine cases that span the late colonial and early independence periods in Mexico. These fascinating documents shed light on the history of women and the family, daily life, and the workings of the ecclesiastical judicial system.
