Abstract
Rodnaya rech' (Родная речь) is a textbook (with companion website) designed for use by heritage learners in beginning Russian classes, whether mixed heritage/non-heritage learner classes or classes designed specifically for heritage learners. Heritage learners--students who have had at least some exposure to Russian through their family background--often have fairly well-developed listening and speaking skills but are still beginners in terms of reading and writing, with limited explicit knowledge of spelling conventions and grammatical systems. Rodnaya rech' builds students' literacy skills and knowledge of grammar while expanding their vocabulary and teaching them strategies to navigate unfamiliar words and forms using the linguistic intuition they've gained from being heritage learners. The textbook and electronic workbook (companion website) can be used in a standalone beginning Russian course for heritage learners. They also work in mixed classrooms, helping heritage learners to take advantage of their knowledge while following a standard beginning Russian curriculum. The materials can facilitate self-study and study in less formal settings as well, such as community centers. Rodnaya rech' can be used either in an intensive one-semester class or at a more measured pace over two semesters.
