Abstract
This funerary inscription provides an intimate and personal snapshot of the early stages of the dynastic transition from Ming to Qing rule. The career of a military officer in the porous region of Northeast Asia reveals the simultaneous flexibility and rigidity of the Ming political and military system during its final decades.
