Abstract
Many American families find themselves caught in an intersecting web of trends that hinder their efforts to advance economically and achieve financial security. Increasing global competition, national and worldwide economic shocks, demographic changes, growing household costs, stagnant wages, and reductions in funding for safety-net and other social and economic support systems are like headwinds, pushing against those who work hard and strive to get ahead.
