Abstract
A verse from the Koran, inscribed over the gates of more than one Ottoman imaret (public kitchen), reads: And they give food in spite of their love for it, to the needy, the orphan, and the captive [saying]: We feed you only for the Face of God; we desire no recompense from you, no thankfulness.1
