Abstract
The pyloric and gastric mill rhythms of the stomatogastric ganglion (STG) were thought to be independently generated by separate groups of neurons with only weak coupling between neurons of the two networks. However, we now report that neurons which are integral components of the pyloric central pattern generating (CPG) network can become rhythmically active in the gastric rhythm, while elements of the gastric CPG can play a role in pyloric pattern generation. This flexibility in neuron motor output provides the network with many different outputs from a small set of neurons.
