Abstract
Fossil gas represents a major dangerous blindspot in the debates about climate solutions. Despite over a decade of scientific research and findings suggesting the contrary, it continues to be touted as a so-called clean or cleaner alternative to oil and coal. Growing commitments to address the climate crisis and increasingly vocal opposition notwithstanding, fossil gas infrastructure is seeing record build-out around the globe, including on both sides of the Atlantic. This development - which doesn't pay attention at all to the dire impacts on global warming as well as potential structural human rights violations and the loss of biodiversity - has been exacerbated in particular since Russia's invasion into Ukraine in February 2022. In this chapter we draw attention to the development of fossil gas infrastructure projects (in particular Liquefied Natural Gas/LNG) and describe grassroots climate activists' efforts to join forces in preventing the transatlantic build-out in Germany, Ireland, and the United States.
