Wright raises questions concerning two points developed by Milgrom: (1) the categories of animals that were forbidden to Israel in Leviticus 11 were determined on the basis of formal criteria, not on the basis of an abhorrence of these animals that preceded the development of the criteria, and (2) the purpose behind the restriction of Israel's choice of edible animals was to inculcate in Israel a reverence for life.
