Abstract
This chapter documents the persistently low rate of employment among people with disabilities in general and the even worse picture of employment among individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The history of vocational training is presented to outline the significant pieces of legislation that have attempted to reduce employment disparities, the fragmented system in existence today, and the huge variation in vocational practices across the United States that have resulted from these policies. The unique vocational needs of individuals with ASD are described, and the eight critical steps necessary to ensure successful employment for individuals with ASD are reviewed. The chapter concludes with a discussion of successful vocational rehabilitation service models for individuals with ASD and a case example.
