Abstract

Alice Shields Electroacoustic Quartet for three percussion and piano temporal compression
While scholarship exists on Alice Shields’ electronic music, little is written about her instrumental works. This dissertation is a step towards rectifying this gap in literature. This document is an analysis of Quartet for Piano and Three Percussion (2016) by Alice Shields. It examines this work through the lenses of electronic music and multicultural traditions, particularly South Indian music, to understand its form, rhythm, pitch structures, motives, and temporal progression.
