Abstract
David [Tsevi] Hoffmann (1843–1921) was an Ortho-dox German rabbi, Jewish legal authority, commu-nal leader, and biblical and rabbinic scholar. He wasborn in Hungary and studied as a youth in the
ye-shivot of Moses Schick and Esriel Hildesheimer. Hoffmann began his university studies in Vienna in1865 and in 1870 he received his doctorate at theUniversity of Tübingen for a dissertation on the3rd-century Jewish sage, Mar Samuel. In 1873 Hoffmann joined the faculty of the Berlin OrthodoxRabbinerseminar and in 1899 he became rector of the seminary. Simultaneously, he served as rabbi of the Berlin separatist Orthodox Congregation Adass Jisroel.
