Abstract
This thesis, The Worlds of the Natural and the Supernatural, examines the worlds of the natural and supernatural in dance, particularly Romantic ballet, by exploring the development of dance in French history, the impact of Romanticism, the role of the ballerina, and marriage conventions. Two major works, La Sylphide and Giselle are used to illustrate the worlds of the natural and the supernatural.
