Abstract
The A scholion for Iliad 5.757--along with the D and T scholia and some papyri--presents ... as a variant for ..., a reading repeated by the T Scholion for 5.872. In his Researches on the Text and Scholia of the "Iliad," Marchinus van der Valk places ... in the "original text" based on its citation by Apollonius Sophista, the appropriateness of ...--for the context, and the tendency of Alexandrian critics to alter expressions considered "indecent with respect to the gods." While such brief arguments failed to persuade subsequent editors such as Helmut Van Thiel and Martin West, good reasons remain to prefer ... for both 5.757 and 5.872. Here,Christensen argues that the manuscript tradition does not adequately support either reading in terms of attestation or antiquity.
