Abstract
There is a striking change in women's consciousness concerning their status and the relationship between the sexes. While previous explanations ascribe this to changes in technology, ideology, and the division of labor, recent demographic trends indicate a shift in the parental and marital roles of both men and women. A t the same time, institutional arrangements emerge by which family functions are regulated. The nature of the family is being transformed as the worlds of women and men increasingly overlap.
