Abstract
Carmen Miranda's popularity in the United States was a manifestation of American fascination with otherness between the world wars. She represented the exotic passions of South America in a comedic way that made her sexuality acceptable. She also in a way personified the US Good Neighbor policy to build commercial trade with South America.
