Abstract
Declared the SEAFLOWER Biosphere
Reserve by the UNESCO program “Man
and the Biosphere” (MAB) in 2000, the
Archipelago of San Andres, Old Providence
and Ketlina is part of the World Network of
Biosphere Reserves.
Of the total area of the archipelago, 1,600
square kilometres are dedicated to conservation (core zones); 73,900 square kilometres
are dedicated to conservation and programs
of low-impact sustainable use (buffer zones);
the rest of the SEAFLOWER Biosphere
Reserve (approximately 224,500 square
kilometres) are dedicated to the development
of cooperative environmental management
activities that give rise to an alternative
sustainable development model (cooperation
or transition zones).
