Abstract

A variety of experiments are presented to illustrate that chemical wave velocities in the iron(II)—nitric acid and in the chlorite-thiosulfate reactions are profoundly affected by the convective motion of the solutions.A qualitative model is developed to interpretthe—sometime speculiar and spectacular—phenomena caused by thesimultaneous cooperative effects of chemical reaction, diffusion, heat conduction, and fluid convection.
