Abstract
The StageWest production of 'Hamlet,' directed by Eric Hill in the style of Japanese teacher and director Tadashi Suzuki, is sexually intense, emphasizes the contradictory nature of identity and gender, especially through the casting of a woman in the title role, and successfully captures the despair and humor in the play. Hill was trained under and uses the Suzuki method of stage acting which stresses physicality and discipline of the body to achieve emotional intensity.
