Abstract
This paper reviews and evaluates two models commonly used to explain divorce rates for remarried couples. One of them, the model of the incomplete institution, is conceptually flawed and empirically unwarranted. The other, a processual model that focuses on the merging of mini-cultures, is more powerful, although it, too, has limitations. A strategy for strengthening the processual model is indicated.
