Abstract
Jewish community centers (JCCs) are fundamentally 20th century agencies that need to upgrade to the 21st century. In order to inspire and inform discussion about such change, the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies at Brandeis University undertook a study of new ideas and innovation in the JCC world. Throughout 2018, the research team conducted literature reviews, scanned the field, and collected stories from innovating JCCs. In the process, it became clear that the issues and opportunities before the JCCs are not unique to Jewish community centers but also have relevance for synagogues and other legacy organizations and agencies in the Jewish community. The report does not intend to present models for others to adopt, but rather to present information and ideas that show possibility and spark new thinking.
