This article uses a speech given by Abraham Lincoln during his debates with Stephen Douglas in 1854 as an example of a plan to prevent slavery's expansion into new territories inspired by hope. Lincoln's response to the Kansas-Nebraska Act, political aspects of practical reason, and conflicts between right and will are presented.
