Abstract
Despite the attention it received in antiquity, Greek and Roman sources are silent about the pre-history of the macabre custom of dining elegantly on the night before facing wild animals in the arena. Recent scholarship, however, has used the insights of comparative anthropology and psychology to deduce its origin.
