Abstract
Recent research by Woo, Fan, Hai, and Jin (1993a, 1993b, 1993c, henceforth WFHJ) raises important issues about the derivation and significance of estimated changes in total factor productivity (TFP) in Chinese industry. This comment focuses on three matters: (1) WFHJ's specific criticisms of our own work in this area; (2) limitations of the sample and methods underlying WFHJ's TFP estimates; and (3) brief observations on the broader issues raised by these authors.
