Abstract

Criticism Economic models Inflation Prices Statistical methods Studies
A rejoinder to Ball and Mankiw (1999) and Verbrugge (1999) is presented. The paper (Bryan & Cecchetti, 1999) in question is not intended as an indictment of the Ball and Mankiw model, but rather as a criticism of the statistical analysis on which it and other similar papers seem to rest. It is maintained that the statistic that has become the focal point in the inflation-relative price debate is at best misleading and at worst simply wrong.
