Abstract
Coupling of ferrocenylzinc chloride with 2,2'-diiodo-l,l'-binaphthyl (1), catalyzed by Pd(0), yields2,2'-diferrocenyl-1,l'-binaphthyl(3)and2-ferrocenyl-2'-iodo-1,l'-binaphthyl(2). Similar coupling of l,l'-bis(chlorozincio)ferrocene with 1 yields 2,2'-(1,l'-ferrocenediyl)-1,l'-binaphthyl (4), together with oligomers, of which the triferrocenyl- and tetraferrocenyl-substituted binaphthyls 5 and 6 have been isolated and characterized. Crystals of 3 (C4oH30Fe2) are monoclinic, space group P2Jn, with a = 14.961(5) k,b = 11.030(5) Á, c = 18.820(5) Á, ß = 110.98(3)°, and Z = 4. The molecular structure of 3 shows an unusual distortion, which is attributed to packing effects. Crystals of 4 (C3oH2oFe) are monoclinic, space group 72/o, with a = 23.493(9) k,b = 7.099(3) Á, c — 25.385(10) Á, ß = 105.84(4)°, and Z = 8. The dihedral angle between the cyclopentadienyl rings in 4 is 12.3(3)°.
