Abstract
Gentrification is less common than feared due to conflicts over neighborhood reputation. In the case of Northside, a predominantly Latino neighborhood in Houston, residents had conflicting views on redevelopment. Some wanted to cleanse the area for gentrification, while others wanted to preserve its character. These conflicts blocked large-scale redevelopment, preventing gentrification. Paying attention to these conflicts can provide insight into why gentrification succeeds or fails in cities.
