Abstract
A transcript of an interview with Larry D. Johnson by Leigh Swigart and David P. Briand. The interview took place on February 18, 2015 in New York, NY, USA, and the transcript, which is represented here, has been reviewed and edited from the original audio version. During the interview, Johnson reminisces on work on UN team to draft the statute for ICTY; UN's handling of challenges and other issues as the ad hoc tribunals began to do their work; experience in UNPROFOR (UN Protection Force) in Zagreb; negotiations with Radovan Karadžić over planes flying into the territory, and experience as chef de cabinet under Theodor Meron. Johnson also discusses differences in statutes for ICTY and ICTR and impact on jurisprudence of the tribunals; debate over the authority of the Security Council to establish the tribunal; reconciliation measures of ad hoc tribunals; why the ad hoc tribunals have gone on so long; political issues in the UN in dealing with international criminal tribunals; legacy of Nuremberg, and legacy of ad hoc tribunals.
