Abstract
A transcript of an interview with Patricia M. Wald by Susana SáCouto and David P. Briand. The interview took place on December 12, 2014 in Washington, DC, USA, and the transcript, which is represented here, has been reviewed and edited from the original audio version. During the interview, Wald reminisces on her early life and education; her early law career in Washington, D.C. in the 1960s and 1970s; D.C. Circuit confirmation hearings; work in the former Soviet Union with the Central and Eastern European Law Initiative (CEELI); recruitment and decision to become ICTY judge; experiences in Sarajevo following the Dayton Accords; adjustments to hybrid system of international law; discussions with fellow judges on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. Wald also discusses the influence of partisanship in federal courts; language barriers among international judges and staff at ICTY; working with other judges from different legal backgrounds and methods; issues of translation in witness testimony; due process at ICTY, and reflections on ICTY defendants.
