Abstract

Fine Arts Photography

Face to Face: Portraits of Self and Others presents a stunning array of photographic portraits primarily drawn from the museum’s permanent collection. The exhibition highlights the versatility of portraiture, the photographic image, and its evolution since the turn of the 19th century. Comprised of images of single individuals, paired figures, and monumental triptychs by a group of multi-generational artists from across the globe, the exhibition explores the artist’s role in capturing personal and collective identities while igniting questions about intersectional identities and the evolving nature of the photographic medium.

Artists on view include: Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Charles H. Currier, Nona Faustine, Gilbert & George, Laura Gilpin, Allen Ginsberg, Myra Greene, Lyle Ashton Harris, Mona Hatoum, Barkley L.
