Abstract
In 2007, The Access Project joined with the University of North Dakota Center for Rural Health and Brandeis
University to gather data about the source, type, and characteristics of farmers’ and ranchers’ health insurance,
as well as about the financial burden healthcare expenses place on farm and ranch families. Data were collected through a telephone survey of over 2,000 non-corporate farm and ranch operators in seven states: Iowa,
Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The survey was conducted by the
National Agricultural Statistics Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. The survey was called
the 2007 Health Insurance Survey of Farmers and Ranchers.
