Abstract
The course is proposed to be taught in the seventh semester of the four-year-BA-Honours program in History. The students would have already done a course in Global Jewish History, titled “The Jews: A Global History, From the Earliest Times to the Present” in the preceding semester. This course, focused on the history of the State of Israel, would be a natural follow-up to the above-mentioned course in Global Jewish History at Presidency University, Kolkata, India. The course has been designed according to the template of Presidency University, Kolkata, India.
Course Objectives
To provide the students a nuanced understanding of the history of the State of Israel, the world’s only Jewish State. The dispute over the land of Israel has been a contentious issue for more than a century and continues to be a flashpoint in world politics. Its importance just cannot be overestimated given how the land is sacred to all three Abrahamic communities, who make up more than half of the world’s population. Given how the control over the land of Israel remains a polarizing issue across the world with no sustainable solution in sight, the need and the importance of developing the ability to engage with and analyse, and contribute in a well- informed manner to research pertaining to the current developments in Israel specifically and the Middle East broadly just cannot be overestimated and that is exactly what this course aspires to do.
