Abstract
This course introduces students to the phenomena of Heritage Tourism, using Israel/Palestine as a historically foundational and still unique case. It interrogates modern tourism through its roots in cultural practice (Temple Judaism), conquest and pilgrimage (Crusader through Ottoman Palestine), colonialism (the mandate era), and modern cultural formations (Zionist, post-Holocaust, and global economics). Students will be introduced to cases and their extensive contexts, and challenged to understand them from cultural and theoretical perspectives. The course will be grounded in history, politics and the arts, and embrace the complexity of cases and moments.
