Abstract
This course examines how the history and culture of modern Israel have been represented in the cinema produced by Israelis since 1948. It thus explores many of the social, cultural, religious, and political factors which have shaped modern Israeli history.
N.B.: The course will be focused on films made largely or partly within Israeli territories (however they be defined) during the period of nationhood (since 1948) which refer substantially to Israeli society and are attributable to a Jewish-Israeli production context. Consequently, only limited consideration will be given to adjacent and overlapping categories such as Palestinian cinema (filmmaking by Palestinians, some of whom are also Israeli citizens) or films produced by Israelis within a non-Israeli production context.
