Abstract
This course will examine the impact of the Holocaust on Israeli politics, society, education, art, film, and literature. By examining the role of the Holocaust in the founding and building of the state of Israel, we will discuss how the memory of the event (collective and private) has been constructed and commemorated there. In addition, we will explore representations of the Holocaust past and memories in Israeli art, literature and film and discuss the problem and limits of language, the role of trauma, authenticity, memory and post-memory, (first and second generation) narratives and storytelling, and identity.
