Bridges and Barriers: Germany, Israel, and the Middle East Conflict explores the intricate and often fraught relationship between Israel and Germany within the broader context of the Middle East. Specifically designed for students in the MMus program at the Barenboim-Said Academy, this course delves into the historical, political, social, and cultural dimensions of this complex triangular relationship. We will examine the history of Palestine/Israel, politics, and society, highlighting its significance for German history and contemporary German debates. Examining themes of antisemitism, racism, the legacies of the Holocaust, colonialism, memory, and identity, the course analyzes both the bridges of cultural and political exchange and cooperation, and the barriers of historical grievances, political conflicts, and differing narratives. This course aims to provide students with a nuanced, critical, and historically informed understanding of the intertwined histories and present realities shaping this critical intersection, fostering constructive dialogue and critical thinking. It encourages openness and curiosity.
