Abstract
Course Description: This course examines the rise of nationalist ideologies and movements across Europe and the Middle East from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. Emphasis is placed on the decline of multiethnic empires—Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, Russian, and British—and the formation of competing national identities, including Zionism, Arabism, Palestinian nationalism, and European nationalism in France, Germany, Italy, and Central and Eastern Europe.
Learning Objectives: trace the intellectual roots and transformations of nationalism; analyze how nationalism contributed to the disintegration of empires; compare nationalist movements across different historical and cultural contexts; engage critically with historiographical and theoretical debates; assess the lasting geopolitical consequences of these movements.
