Abstract
“Beyond the Bunk” traces shifting sexual ethics within Jewish youth spaces, using the lens of #MeToo to reevaluate the social and cultural notion of Jewish continuity, and role of continuity rhetoric in shaping problematic sexual cultures found within Jewish summer camps and youth groups. Chapter 1, "Sexual Ethics in the #MeToo Era and Jewish Continuity", analyzes the impact of the #MeToo movement on the liberal American Jewish community, influencing critiques of the Jewish continuity paradigm and raising questions about sexual norms and practices within Jewish youth spaces. Chapter 2,"Curricula Case Study: Sex Ed or Sex Ethics?" looks at common themes in sexual ethics curricula for Jewish youth, highlighting the influence of communal rhetoric and the lack of sex education content in sex ethics curricula. Chapter 3, "'The hookup culture is something I’ve never seen anywhere else except for here': Cultures of Sexuality in Jewish Youth Spaces " takes a close look at the evolution of sexual cultures in summer camps and youth groups, featuring testimony that emphasizes how current and former participants in Jewish youth spaces have a collective memory of toxic hookup culture that transcends generation, geographic location, or denomination. The final chapter, "Analyzing Accountability," addresses how Jewish youth spaces have investigated reports of toxic hookup culture, as well as how existing and new Jewish organizations have prioritized inclusivity and accountability in recent years.
