Abstract
The city of Somerville has experienced rapid gentrification and development projects, with the Green Line expansion and $256 million renovation of the local public high school. Once a diverse city, it is now facing issues of displacement due to these rapid changes. This paper will explore the effects of gentrification and focus on surveillance to highlight how students of color at Somerville High have been affected. With the use of 10 interviews from Somerville High Alumni and their narratives, this paper links in-school policing to the active process of gentrification and institutional mourning.
