Abstract
This thesis tracks the evolution of romantic female friendships from the Progressive Era to the development of a lesbian identity by World War II. It further investigates the ways in which women’s colleges and changing discourses of sexuality contributed to the formation of female friendships and a nascent lesbian identity.
