Scholarship and Biography

Sharon Reif, Ph.D., has over 25 years of experience conducting health services research related to the substance use disorder (SUD) treatment system and recovery supports, with a focus on access, quality and delivery of services, as well as outcomes and recovery. She is Co-Director (MPI) of the NIDA-funded Brandeis-Harvard SPIRE Center: SUD System Performance Improvement Research & Engagement. She leads NIH-funded studies on systems approaches for treating opioid addiction, measuring recovery from SUD, and pathways to alcohol recovery in the Black population of Detroit. Dr. Reif has studied medications for treating addiction; systems approaches to improve treatment for SUD; access to behavioral health services; the role of incentives in driving quality; and the intersection of alcohol and drug use/misuse with other disabilities, pain, and chronic conditions. She also has interest in addressing stigma and discrimination due to SUD and disabilities. At the Heller School, Dr. Reif is part of the leadership team for the Institute for Behavioral Health, part of the Schneider Institutes for Health Policy & Research, and Deputy Director of its National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) doctoral training program.
