Scholarship and Biography
I came to Brandeis in 2022 after several years working in the UK, firstly, at King's College London and, after at the University of St Andrews. My research concerns the archaeology and material culture of the ancient Mediterranean, with a focus on pre- and early-Roman Italy and the Punic world. I am especially interested in questions of social and gender identities in the past and how we can use material evidence to better understand ancient societies.
I am also a field archaeologist and have worked with the Poggio Civitate Excavation Project since 2009 on the investigation of an Etruscan settlement south of Siena. I have been especially interested in considering the broader archaeological landscape of this important site which led to excavations in the nearby town of Vescovado di Murlo between 2015 and 2017 and subsequent survey of other potential areas of ancient activity. In 2015 I starting working with the Pantelleria Project on the excavation of a Punic and Roman sanctuary site on the island of Pantelleria. This projected has broadened my interests, especially to consider the wider social and cultural connections across the Western Mediterranean in the first millennium BCE.
