Scholarship and Biography

Robert R. Reitano is Professor of the Practice of Finance at Brandeis International Business School where he specializes in risk management and quantitative finance, and has previously served as MSF Program Director, and, Senior Director of Academics. He has been Adjunct Professor at the Wuhan University of Technology School of Economics, Visiting Professor at Reykjavik University School of Business, and Adjunct Professor in Boston University's Masters Degree program in Mathematical Finance.


Dr. Reitano periodically consults in investment strategy and financial risk management, was Chief Investment Officer of Controlled Risk Insurance Company (CRICO), and previously had a 29 year career at John Hancock/Manulife in asset/liability risk management and investment strategy, advancing to Executive Vice President & Chief Investment Strategist.


His research papers have appeared in a number of journals and have won an Annual Prize of the Society of Actuaries and two biennial F.M. Redington Prizes awarded by the Investment Section of the Society of the Actuaries. His book, “Introduction to Quantitative Finance: A Math Tool Kit,” was published by The MIT Press in January, 2010, and translated into Chinese by Truth & Wisdom Press in March, 2015. He is self-publishing an advanced follow-on series, “Foundations of Quantitative Finance,” of which the first eight books were published in 2017-21 and are available on his website at http://www.robertrreitano.com/fqf/. These volumes are being edited for publication with Chapman and Hall/CRC Press. Books I-II were published in 2022, Books III-IV are forthcoming in 2023.


Dr. Reitano was recommended to the Fulbright Specialist Roster for 2020-2025, has served as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Professional Risk Managers International Association (PRMIA), on the Executive Committee of the PRMIA Board, as member of the PRMIA Boston Steering Committee, He currently serves on the Financial Research Committee of the Society of Actuaries, for which he was recognized with a 2022 Outstanding Volunteers award, and serves on other not-for-profit boards and investment committees.


He has a Ph.D. in Mathematics from MIT, is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst.
